If you’ve ever gotten a quote from a big ad agency for a new website, you already know the drill: a large project fee, a long list of “extras,” and, once the site finally launches, a support contract to keep it running. Want to swap out a photo or update your hours? That’s often another invoice and another wait.
As a freelance graphic and web designer based in Calgary, I do things a bit differently. Here’s why, and how it might change the way you think about your next website project.
I Build on WordPress and Elementor — On Purpose
There are dozens of ways to build a website, and plenty of agencies lean on custom code or proprietary platforms that only they can edit. I choose WordPress paired with Elementor for a simple reason: it strikes the right balance between a polished, professional design and a website you can actually manage yourself once it’s live.
WordPress powers a huge share of the web for good reason — it’s flexible, well-supported, and not going anywhere. Elementor adds a visual, drag-and-drop page builder on top of it, which means the backend of your site doesn’t look like a wall of confusing code. It looks like the page you’re actually looking at.
You can see this approach in action across a range of past projects in my portfolio.
You Shouldn’t Need to Call Someone Every Time You Update a Photo
This is probably the biggest difference between how I work and how a typical agency operates. Many agencies build sites that are, frankly, designed to keep you dependent on them. Every small change becomes a billable task.
I take the opposite approach. Once your site is built, I record a personalized training video (or walk you through it live, whichever you prefer) that shows you exactly how to:
- Swap out photos and images
- Update text and copy
- Add a new blog post or announcement
- Make other simple, everyday changes
But I’m Still Here When You Need Me
Being able to make small updates yourself doesn’t mean you’re on your own for everything. If you run into something trickier — a layout change, a new page, a redesign down the road, or you just don’t have the time to do it yourself — I’m still available. Think of it less like “I built your site and disappeared” and more like an ongoing relationship with someone who already knows your brand, your goals, and how your site is put together.

Why This Matters for Calgary Small Businesses
Most small business owners and entrepreneurs in Calgary don’t have an in-house marketing team. You’re busy running your business — the last thing you need is a website that adds friction every time something small needs updating. A site that’s:
- Easy to manage saves you time and money over the life of the website.
- Built on WordPress keeps your options open — you’re never locked into one designer or plug-in.
- Backed by real training means you’re not guessing every time you log in.
- Supported by someone reachable means help is never far away when you need it.
That combination — professional design, an editable foundation, hands-on training, and ongoing support — is what I try to offer every client, whether you’re a solo entrepreneur, a local shop, or a growing small business here in Calgary.
